Aerospace Engineer – U.S. Customs and Border Protection Role: Aerospace Engineer Location Washington, DC (and potentially other duty locations as per announcement) Pay Range Base pay: $142,488.00/yr – $185,234.00/yr (GS-14, Step 1–10). Summary Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Air and Marine Operations, Engineering Support Staff, located in Washington DC. Additional selections may be made for other organizational divisions and/or units within the listed duty location(s). The position involves aircraft flight test (post maintenance and integration), evaluation of engineering modifications, system troubleshooting, performance of flight and/or ground simulations of system and aircraft performance to ensure maximum airworthiness and flight safety, and participation in the evaluation and reporting on new system concepts and new advanced systems. Salary is GS-14 Step 1-10. Responsibilities Analyze the utilization, modification, and flight operation of aircraft and associated systems, serving as technical authority involving advanced flight operations engineering and systems integration techniques. Manage and evaluate all major design changes and modifications to ground and flight systems, approving test procedures to determine operational suitability. Coordinate with other government agencies for the installation and operation of surveillance and reconnaissance equipment, assisting in establishing training requirements for operational personnel. Evaluate and assess the flight readiness of assigned aircraft, ensuring modifications do not adversely affect operational safety beyond acceptable risk levels. Review ground and flight data to verify overall vehicle structural systems, subsystems, suitability, specifications, and safety compliance. Qualifications Degree: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (ABET accredited program or equivalent coursework in engineering sciences). Combination of education and experience: College-level education, training, and/or technical experience equivalent to a thorough knowledge of physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering. Professional licensure or registration: Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or Professional Engineer (PE) by any state. FE examination: Successful passing of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam or equivalent. Experience: One year of specialized experience at the GS‑13 (or equivalent) level performing duties such as evaluating and testing design changes to aircraft, applying engineering and systems integration expertise, analyzing new technologies in fielded aircraft systems, and coordinating installation of sensors and mission systems at field locations. Requirements You must be a U.S. citizen. Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with Selective Service. Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.
